First Wednesday Writers find a new Lewes home - come and join us.

I've been running a poetry group here in Lewes for a year now. We took a summer break and made an amicable agreement with our previous venue, both sides agreeing that it had been great but it was time to move on. We now have a home in the rather smart new coffee house, just round the corner form my house and called, accurately enough, The Coffee House.  Thanks to owner Michael Temple for allowing us to meet there. The group is called First Wednesday Writers and we meet on the first Wednesday of every month.  Wednesday, 2nd October, marks the beginning of our new term so, if you like poetry, write poetry or just want to find out if you like poetry and you can get to Lewes, we'd love to see you.

I'm trying to fit my poetry in around my fiction writing. I'm hoping to  finish the second draft of my new novel before Christmas and I'm getting ready for the imminent publication (31st October 2013)  of my first novel, Stephen Dearsley's Summer Of Love, the story of a young fogey living in Brighton in 1967 who has a lot to learn when the flowering hippie counter culture changes him and the world around him.

I'm the "writer who cheated death" - if you don't believe me buy today's Sussex Express.

I've finally made it to the pages of my local newspaper, the Sussex Express, who have decided to run a "human interest" piece on the imminent publication of my novel, Stephen Dearsley's Summer Of Love.  It's always interesting to see what journalists home in on as their main tag. I'm now "the writer who cheated death." Well so be it - actually it's true.

I'm now officially excited about next month's launch of the book. It comes out on 31st October, Halloween, the day after the fifth anniversary of the brain haemorrhage that nearly cheated me of my life. I'm doubly glad that I have a new and much jollier anniversary to celebrate in late October.

So thanks, Sussex Express, for taking an interest. Dare I go out though? Will I be stopped everywhere I go in Lewes today? I'll let you all know.

Café society at The Poetry Place - poetry and fun in Covent Garden

I was at the the Poetry Society's Poetry Café in Covent Garden, London on Friday for a poetry event hosted by my publishers, Ward Wood Publishing. I'd never been there before thinking that it might be a rather forbidding environment someone like me who likes to keep his superficiality to the fore. I was wrong, it was fun.

I was there for the launch of Ward Wood's latest poetry collection, The Anvil's Prayer by Scottish-Canadian poet James W. Wood with  support from Peter Phillips who read from his latest Ward Wood collection, Oscar and I.

Adele Ward

After a pot of tea and a rather large orange and cream cheese cake, I went down to the performance space where Ward Wood's Adele Ward hosted the late afternoon session which consisted of the two readings and also some extra poetry from the largely poetic members of the audience, including other Ward Wood writers, American-in-London novelist and poet, Sue Guiney, poet David Cooke from Grimsby, Yorkshire and, well,  I had to read too, myself.

James W. Wood

James gave an emotionally charged reading from his equally emotional  but also highly varied collection as well as giving a splendidly authentic performance of some Robbie Burns.

Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips, always a favourite of mine at these events, writes with real wit, sardonic humour and sensitivity his book, Oscar and I, is full of laughter and some tears. Oscar is a small dog and the Me is a minor poet struggling phlegmatically in a not always grateful literary world.

Us the audience then took our turn before returning upstairs where some of us Peter, Sue, Adele and I,  had a few drinks and some excellent conversation. It is a continuing delight meeting up with other Ward Wood writers. Maybe, we thought, it would be fun if we did more readings together as a group. We could go on the road like a rock band - now there's a thought. Peter is working on a new collection, Sue will be having a new novel published early next year, the second in her moving series set in a Cambodian orphanage and inspired by her regular work there. We will all have new work to take on tour - we could also have some fun.

Sue Guiney

I'm getting into gear for the imminent publication (31st October 2013) by Ward Wood of my novel, Stephen Dearsley's Summer Of Love, the story of a young fogey living in Brighton in 1967 who has a lot to learn when the flowering hippie counter culture changes him and the world around him.

Getting published is an honour and a thrill - I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.

Over the weekend I received two copies of Cinnamon Press's latest anthology, Reaching Out - a book of poetry and short stories which contains one of my poems, Home Movie. It felt good handling these rather smart paperbacks and it got me into the mood for next month when my novel, Stephen Dearsley's Summer Of Love comes out in paperback too as well as on Kindle. I don't want to get over-excited or rise above my station but, if I can't enjoy the satisfaction of having my work published now then I don't really deserve to be excited about anything. It's a long journey from boyhood dreams to adult fulfillment. I intend to savour the moment.

I'm proud to appear within the pages of one of distinguished publisher, Cinnamon Press's books. If you're interested, not just in my work  but in reading a collection of work by what Cinnamon describes as "new and emerging voices in short story and poetry" then you can buy it directly from the publishers on the link below:

Another anthology that my work (my poem, Crushed) appeared in this year is Genius Floored: Uncurtained Window edited by poet Ruth O'Callaghan published by Soaring Penguin Press. This neat little poetry book raises money for Cold Weather Shelter For The Homeless, the charity that offers night shelter to the homeless  in London during the coldest months of the year. It's a great little book with some interesting poetry from many of my fellow poets from the Camden Lumen Poetry http://camdenlumen.wordpress.com/about/ along with work by Ruth O'Callaghan and the distinguished poet, Anne Stevenson. I was proud to be in their number. I also enjoy my regular trips to read at Camden Lumen Poetry events every month where, yet again, all the proceeds go to this highly effective and worthwhile charity.

The publisher, Soaring Penguin Press is about to put it up on its website where you can order it direct:

Meanwhile, I'm getting into gear for the imminent publication (31st October 2013)  of my novel, Stephen Dearsley's Summer Of Love, the story of a young fogey living in Brighton in 1967 who has a lot to learn when the flowering hippie counter culture changes him and the world around him.
